Privacy Policy

Vocabeelary ("we," "us," or "the app") is an SAT^® vocabulary app for iPhone. This policy explains what information the app and the website at vocabeelary.app collect, why, who processes it on our behalf, and how to delete it.

The short version

We keep your study progress and settings so they sync to your account.
Your name and email come from Sign in with Apple or Google and are used only for your account.
When the AI tutor writes a memory hook or example sentences, it is sent the word and its definition. Never your name, email, or account ID.
No ads, no analytics or tracking SDKs, and we never sell your information.
You can delete your account and data at any time in the app.

Information we collect

Account information

You sign in with Apple or Google. We receive a unique account identifier and, depending on the provider and your choices, your name and email address (and, for Google, a link to your profile picture). If you use Sign in with Apple with "Hide My Email," we receive only a private relay address. This information is held by our sign-in service, Firebase Authentication, and shown to you in the app. It is not stored with your study progress.

Learning data

To make your account work across devices, we store:

Your progress on each word, and any AI memory hooks you save
Your streak, today's counts, and your daily goal
Your study settings (such as mastery thresholds, sound and haptics) and your reminder preferences (whether they are on, and at what time)
A short activity log of recent answers (the word, the study mode, whether you were right, and when) and a total for each day. The app keeps only the last 7 days: older entries are removed from your device and your account the next time you open the app. You can also clear them in the app at any time.

This is saved on your device and in your account in our cloud database (Cloud Firestore). A few choices on the study screen, such as the mode and letter range you last picked, are kept only on your device.

AI tutor usage records

To enforce fair-use limits on the AI tutor, our server keeps a running total of your AI usage for the current month and a count of requests in the last minute. These counters are tied to your account and reset automatically.

App integrity

We use Firebase App Check with Apple's App Attest to confirm that requests come from a genuine copy of the app on a genuine Apple device. This helps stop abuse and does not identify you personally.

Technical and log data

Like most online services, our providers process basic technical information, such as IP address, device and operating-system type, and app version, to deliver the service, keep sign-in secure, and prevent abuse. When you use the AI tutor, our server records a log entry with your account identifier, the word, the type of request, and the time, so we can diagnose problems and investigate misuse.

If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone's settings, Apple may also give us aggregated usage and crash information. We do not receive this otherwise.

What we do not collect

The app does not include Firebase Analytics or any other analytics, advertising, or tracking SDK. It does not access your location, contacts, photos, camera, or microphone, does not use your device's advertising identifier, and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

How the AI tutor works

Memory hooks and example sentences that already exist are reused first. When the tutor needs to write a new hook for you (after "Help me remember" or "Show me another way"), or fresh example sentences for a word you have practiced many times, the app sends only the word's identifier to our server. Our server then asks Anthropic's Claude model for a result, sending the word, its part of speech, its definition from our word list and, for sentences, a few existing example sentences so the new ones are different. We do not send your name, email, account identifier, or anything you have typed.

Results that pass our content filter are added to a shared library of hooks and sentences that every Vocabeelary user can be shown. They contain nothing about you or who requested them. A hook you save is also stored with your own progress.

Study reminders

Reminders are local notifications scheduled on your device. We do not use push notifications, and no reminder is sent from our servers. Your reminder preferences are saved with your settings as described above. You can turn reminders off in the app, or in your iPhone's Settings.

How we use your information

To respond when you contact us

We do not sell your personal information, share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, or use it for advertising of any kind.

Service providers

We use a small number of providers to run Vocabeelary. They process information on our behalf and under their own privacy terms:

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the service.

Our providers may store and process information in the United States and other countries where they operate.

Data security

Data travels over encrypted connections. Our database rules allow each account to read and write only its own data, and the AI tutor only accepts requests from signed-in users of a genuine copy of the app. On your iPhone, the app's save file is protected by iOS data protection. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information.

Data retention

Progress and settings are kept while your account exists.
The activity log keeps only the last 7 days (older entries are removed the next time you open the app), and you can clear it sooner.
AI usage counters reset each month and are removed when your account is deleted.
Server logs are kept for a limited period (by default, about 30 days) and then deleted automatically.
Signing out clears your progress from the app on that device. It stays in your account for next time.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account in the app at any time: open Settings, scroll to the very bottom, and tap Delete Account. You will be asked to type DELETE and to confirm with Apple or Google.

Deleting your account permanently removes your progress, streak, settings, activity log, and saved memory hooks from your device and from our database, and deletes your sign-in account. Your AI usage records are then removed automatically by our server. This cannot be undone.

Some information is not tied to you and is not removed: AI-generated hooks and sentences in the shared library, which never contained anything about you, and server logs, which expire on their own schedule.

If you signed in with Apple, you can also stop Vocabeelary's access to your Apple Account in your iPhone's Settings, under Sign in with Apple. If you signed in with Google, you can do the same in your Google Account under third-party connections.

If you can't access the app, email support@vocabeelary.app with the email address linked to your account and we will delete it for you. We may ask you to confirm the request before acting on it.

Children's privacy

Vocabeelary is intended for people 13 and older. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

Your rights and choices

Access: your progress, settings, and activity are visible in the app. To request a copy of the information we hold, contact us.
Correction: your name and email come from Apple or Google; update them there.
Deletion: delete your account in the app, or contact us.
Reminders and history: turn reminders off, or clear your activity log, at any time.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law, such as to object to or restrict certain processing, to data portability, or to complain to a data protection authority. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights. To make a request, email us and include the email address linked to your account.

Our website

vocabeelary.app does not use cookies, analytics, or advertising. Its pages load fonts from Google Fonts, so your browser contacts Google's servers when you visit, and our hosting provider processes standard request information, such as IP address, to deliver the pages.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app changes. We will post the new version here with a new effective date.
